Bertie was handed in when his previous elderly owner became unable to care for him anymore. He was pampered and loved very much. He is a typical companion dog, but being used to being with his owner 24/7, he is not keen on being left alone.

Bertie currently has two older girls for company in foster, although they do not play with him. He would probably benefit from a gentle, playful companion. He has started to play fetch with a tennis ball. He does retrieve and will let you take the ball from him with no issues. He appears to be quite intelligent and a quick learner. His fosterers have only left him for 10 minutes with their two dogs and didn't perceive any problems, but he does want to attach to somebody who will give him time and attention but is also firm and consistent. This is an area that will need working on to build up his time away from you. He whines for attention and also when he needs to go out. On arrival, he did howl, but that stopped as he settled (the next day).

Bertie is a very gentle, loving, sweet-natured boy and should settle very quickly. He would suit someone who is at home most of the time and who would give him lots of cuddles, walks and play. He walks well on a lead. If he does pull, a gentle reminder is all that is required. His recall has been excellent from the very first time he was let off his lead. He keeps checking that you are behind him, and he returns as soon as you call him, especially for a high-value treat. His fosterers started in enclosed areas. He has been excellent with all the dogs he has met, both on and off the lead, and he has had zoomies with a couple of them.

Bertie is slightly rotund from his previous diet of human food, so his weight will need to be watched and his food regulated. This, currently, is quite easy as he is not keen on only dry dog food. It needs to be coated with an appetiser. We use a tiny amount of tinned dog food, dog-suitable gravy, or fish in oil.

Bertie used to sleep with his previous owner but has not been allowed on our beds. He has settled on a dog bed near us or on the landing. He does tend to get up early with the need to go to the toilet.

Bertie is being fostered in Cheshire.
