It is with great sadness, and frustration, that the Dream Team need to announce we will not be going ahead with this year’s Doodlefest.
Despite finding a great new location, the lateness in the day and outside factors have all worked against us, and we feel the mountain is too high to climb. As well as our usual weekend being unavailable, there is a large event in the area on the same day which has attracted the trade stalls that we would have hoped to have. The cost of equipment such as the marquee and tables, etc, has risen extortionately, boosted not only by inflation but by the fact that everyone is having outdoor events this year. Hire companies are making the most of it, and marquees are rarer than sausages after a Doodle meet.
Historically Doodlefest has cost in excess of £20,000. The return that we get on that is minimal, but the PR and education go a long way to helping the rescue. To go ahead this year with no entertainment, stalls, etc, to have just a Doodle camp, would need us to charge people over and above what we would normally. As a charity, we can’t take the risk of losing money. With the best will in the world, we can’t expect people to come for ‘nothing’, though we know some of you would, just to see friends.
It's an extraordinary time for Doodle Trust. As you all probably know, all rescues are overwhelmed with the sheer number of dogs needing rescue spaces. The team and all the volunteers are working flat out, but there is currently no light at the end of the tunnel. Rescue is our priority at the end of the day, and we have to give 100% to it, without the additional work that putting on Doodlefest takes.
We won’t be holding a Virtual Doodlefest this year either, but please don’t let that stop all of you from meeting up with friends and having your own mini Doodlefests over the summer. Don’t forget to share the photos!
